How to add a room planner to a Shopify furniture store

Updated 31 Oct 2026 · 5 steps free · 4 with the app

Short answer

Shopify has no room planner built in. The free ways are paper or a free online planner, tape on the floor, or a 3D model of each product for Shopify's "View in your space". The Rooms add-on for RNS Product Visualizer puts a planner on your store: shoppers place your own pieces at the size and colour they pick, see whether they fit, and add the whole room to the cart.

Why Shopify doesn't do it on its own

A Shopify product page shows photos, videos and, if you upload one, a 3D model. On phones that support it, a "View in your space" button puts that model in the shopper's room in AR. But you need a 3D file for each product, AR shows one product at a time, and nothing in Shopify knows where the shopper's door, window or walkway is. Planning a room with several of your pieces takes an app.

The free way

  1. Give exact sizes. Put width × depth × height in the description and a size drawing in the photos. Add the narrowest doorway it fits through.
  2. Send shoppers to plan. Add a "Measure your room" page with a printable grid, or point them to a free online room planner.
  3. Suggest tape. Ask shoppers to mark each piece's footprint on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it.
  4. Upload 3D models. Add a 3D model to each product so phones that support AR show "View in your space".
  5. Offer a design call. The shopper sends room sizes and photos; you send back a layout.

Where the free way falls short

  • Shoppers leave your store to plan, and a general planner doesn't have your pieces, sizes or colours.
  • Paper and tape are work. Many shoppers skip it, guess, and then return the piece or never buy.
  • A 3D model for every product and size costs time or money, and AR shows one piece without your other pieces.
  • Nothing warns that the walkway is too narrow or the door won't open.
  • Nothing ends in your cart, and design calls don't scale past a few a week.

The easier way: RNS Product Visualizer with Rooms

  1. Set up sizes once. The app reads each product's options with AI and you check the numbers. The same setup draws a Size preview on the product page. No 3D files.
  2. Turn on Rooms. You get starter rooms (Living, Bedroom, Dining, Office) laid out with your own products, and you can edit them. Shoppers open the planner from a "Plan your room" button in the Size preview, a Room planner block on any page, or its own page you link from your menu.
  3. Shoppers plan their room. They pick one of your rooms or type their own room size, move doors and windows, and place your pieces at the size and colour they choose, from above, in 3D or at eye height. As they move a piece it shows Fits, Tight or Doesn't fit (walkways, door swings, space behind dining chairs). A piece they already own goes in as a plain box with its size.
  4. Save, share, buy. They save the room or share it by link, then add every ticked piece to the cart in one tap.

Rooms is +$29 a month on Pro ($29 a month, 14-day free trial) or Plus ($49 a month), billed by Shopify: Pro with Rooms is $58 a month.

What to know: pieces are clean shapes at the right size and colour, not photos (Plus adds legs, edges and wood). The app counts rooms planned and pieces added to the cart, not orders. Only products with a Size preview setup can go in a room.

Questions

Does Shopify have a room planner?

No. It can show a 3D model you upload, and "View in your space" for that one product on phones that support AR. A room with several pieces, walls and doors needs an app.

Do I need 3D models for Rooms?

No. The app draws each piece from the sizes and colours in your product options.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The room fills most of the screen and the tools sit at the bottom. Shoppers can switch between feet and inches and centimetres.

Can shoppers plan sectionals in a room?

Yes, with the Modular builder add-on: a set built from your pieces goes into the room and lists its parts. See how to let shoppers build a sectional.
