Why Shopify doesn't do it on its own
A sectional is a row of pieces (left arm, armless seat, corner, chaise, right arm) in any order and number. A Shopify product has up to 3 options and 2,048 variants, so each layout must be made ahead of time. Shopify Bundles makes fixed bundles and multipacks: up to 30 pieces, 3 options and 100 variants a bundle. Its stock is counted overall, not by location, and the bundle price doesn't change when a piece's price does. A set the shopper builds needs a developer or an app.
The free way
- Layouts as variants. One product with a Layout option (3-seat, L-shape left, L-shape right, U-shape) and a Fabric option, with a photo for each.
- Or fixed bundles. Make each layout a bundle of your piece products in Shopify Bundles, so orders list each piece's SKU.
- Or sell each piece with a diagram. List every piece as its own product and add a drawing with each piece's code and width, plus a page on which pieces join.
- Or quote. The shopper sends a sketch and you send a draft order.
Where the free way falls short
- Variants: every new layout times every fabric is more variants and photos, and stock is per layout, not per piece.
- Bundles: the shopper can't swap a piece or add a second armless seat.
- Piece by piece: shoppers order two left arms or a chaise on the wrong side, and can't see the overall size.
- None of them shows whether the sectional fits the shopper's wall or corner.
- Quoting loses the shoppers who wanted to buy now.
The easier way: RNS Product Visualizer with Modular builder
- Make a set from your pieces. In Sets, pick the products that are your pieces and how they join. It works for sofas and sectionals, shelving walls and bedroom sets. Each piece stays its own product, with its own SKU and stock.
- Shoppers build it in 3D. A "Build your set" button on each piece's page opens the builder. It offers only pieces that join the build so far, shows the set to scale with its overall width and depth, and checks it against their wall, a second wall round a corner, and the ceiling.
- One tap adds the set. Every piece lands as its own cart line, named with the set it belongs to. If you like, give a discount on complete sets built in the builder, with chosen pieces kept at full price.
Modular builder is +$49 a month on Pro ($29 a month, 14-day free trial) or Plus ($49 a month), billed by Shopify: Pro with Modular builder is $78 a month.
What to know: pieces are clean shapes drawn from each piece's sizes, not photos. AR of a whole set isn't available yet, and there's no builder at the POS. The set discount asks for one extra permission (manage discounts) the first time. Shopify's default packing slip doesn't print line notes; Settings › Sets gives the one line to paste into it.
Questions
Can Shopify Bundles let shoppers build their own set?
No. It sells fixed bundles and multipacks that you make in advance. A set the shopper chooses piece by piece needs a developer or an app.
Does each piece keep its own stock?
Yes. Each piece is a normal cart line, so Shopify counts stock and SKUs per piece.
Can shoppers see the sectional in their room?
Yes, with the Rooms add-on: the set goes into a room plan with fit checks. See how to add a room planner.
