Why Shopify doesn't do it on its own
Shopify's local pickup has two moments: Ready for pickup and Picked up. When you mark an order ready, the customer gets the "Ready for pickup" email. If they don't come, Shopify doesn't follow up. There's no setting for a second reminder after a few days.
You can re-send the email by hand, but only one order at a time. And Shopify Flow can't fill the gap: Shopify's marketing automations only send to customers who agreed to email marketing, and many pickup customers never did.
The free way
You can do this today with no app.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Orders and open a pickup order that's still waiting.
- Scroll to the Timeline and find the "Ready for pickup" email.
- Click Resend email under it, choose to send it to the customer, and send.
- Want to add your pickup hours or a "we'll hold it until Friday" note? Instead of resending, click the customer's email in the Contact section. This opens the Contact customer box, where you can write your own message.
- Leave a comment on the timeline, such as "Reminder sent 6 Oct", so the next person on the counter knows. Comments are only seen by staff.
- When the customer comes in, click Mark as picked up. You can tick Send notification to customer to send the "Picked up by customer" email.
Repeat for every order on the shelf. A weekly check (say, every Monday) helps you catch the ones that slipped through.
Where the free way falls short
- It's one order at a time. Ten parcels on the shelf means ten orders to open.
- You have to remember to check. Nothing tells you an order has been waiting five days.
- Resending gives the customer the same email they already ignored. A real reminder with your hours means typing it each time.
- There's no single list for the counter of what's waiting and for how long.
The easier way: RNS Pickup Reminders
RNS Pickup Reminders sends a friendly reminder from your shop when a pickup order has been ready for a few days and nobody has come.
- Install the app. In Settings › Timing, choose when the first reminder goes out (2 days after "Ready for pickup" by default), which days and what time.
- In Settings › Locations, add the pickup hours and a short note for each location. Check the wording in Email templates, send yourself a test, then turn Test mode off.
- Mark orders "Ready for pickup" in Shopify as usual. Reminders go out by themselves and stop when you press Picked up in Shopify or Mark collected in the app.
Your counter staff also get one list of everything waiting, oldest first, with one tap to mark it collected (it works on a phone too).
Free: 20 reminders a month, one pickup location, first reminder. Pro: $15 a month with a 14-day free trial, for unlimited reminders at every location, plus a final notice with a hold period and an Overdue flag.
What it can't do: it doesn't resend Shopify's own "Ready for pickup" notification. It sends its own reminder from your shop's name.
Questions
Can I bulk notify customers that their order is ready for pickup?
Shopify's help only describes re-sending the "Ready for pickup" email from each order's timeline, one at a time. With RNS Pickup Reminders, every waiting order gets its reminder on schedule without you opening each one.
Can Shopify Flow send pickup reminders days after "Ready for pickup"?
Not to every customer. Shopify's marketing automations only go to people who agreed to email marketing, so many pickup customers would be left out.
Do reminders go out for orders I marked ready before installing?
No. The app reminds about local pickup orders you mark Ready for pickup after you install it.
